FINDING A FEEDING PATTERN

Dahlias are heavy feeders and, arguably, finicky; it’s difficult to generalize about fertilizing requirements from one region to another. Some professional growers advise feeding dahlias a month after they sprout with a low-nitrogen fertilizer, such as bonemeal or any 5-10-10 or 10-20-20 balanced product. Too much nitrogen (represented by the first number in the NPK formula) results in big leaves and stalks but not optimum flowering. A grower on Cape Cod (Mass.) for years noted that his dahlias needed more manure than he could conveniently supply, while an avid Maryland dahlia devotee claimed that gardeners who have sandy soil and frequent rain or irrigation need to be sure that they supply enough water-soluble nutrients (primarily potassium and sulfur) during the growing season. Be sure to withhold fertilizer about a month before frost; this will help the tubers to keep better over the winter.
